THE NECESSITY OF SOIL RECYCLING

OVERCOMING THE CHALLENGE

Environmental Compliance Consultants, Inc. (ECC) successfully remediated approximately 573 cubic yards (cy) of petroleum contaminated soil at Kwajalein and Roi-Namur. Kwajalein and Roi-Namur islands are located within the Kwajalein Atoll and part of the Republic of Marshall Islands.

Backfill for construction projects is a limited resource at Kwajalein and Roi-Namur, therefore it is highly important to remediate all petroleum contaminated for re-use. A single established landfarm containing approximately 450 cy of petroleum contaminated soil at Roi-Namur. Soil was generated from a spill and placed in the landfarm in 2013. Two landfarm cells and a stockpile cell were managed at Kwajalein. Approximately 123cy of petroleum contaminated soil generated from construction activities were remediated at the Kwajalein landfarm cells. ECC effectively met the cleanup criteria of all 450cy at Roi-Namur and 123cy at Kwajalein in 2021. Successfully executed during a global pandemic and travel restrictions in place for the entirety of the project.

Project Location

Roughly 2,100 nautical miles southwest of Honolulu, Hawaii.
